The Kindle vs Nook – Which Electronic Reader is the Best?
These days eReaders, or electronic readers, as they are commonly known, are hot sellers. People love having the ability to carry around a virtual library, loaded with dozens, possibly hundreds of books on a slim, easy to carry electronic device. The two most popular electronic readers are the Kindle, from Amazon and the Nook, from the folks at Barnes & Noble. Each of these e-readers is vying for the top spot, but people want to know which is the best.

Kindle Vs Nook The Stakes are Huge
Both Amazon and Barnes & Noble know that the payoff for being the top dog in the electronic reader industry is huge. As people are just beginning to realize how powerful and convenient these devices are, more and more customers are buying them every day. And while some naysayers have predicted that tablet computers will phase e-readers out, experts in the electronics industry all agree that there is a strong customer base of electronic book fans that will keep the industry humming along for many years to come.
And since it looks like both the Kindle vs Nook are going to be around for quite a while, we decided to compare them against each other to see which one is the champ and which one is the chump. Like any other match-up, each side here has strengths and weaknesses, so let’s take a look at the strengths of each to get started.
The Amazon Kindle – Strong Points
- Superior wireless delivery. Amazon has been in the online game longer than just about any other company. As a result, they’ve been on the cutting edge of all kinds of technological advances. Perhaps none of their technology is as impressive as their Whispernet wireless service. This fast wireless data delivery network is available all over the world and helps Kindle customers instantly download their ebooks for instant reading.
- Sleek, Attractive Design. While the first generation Kindles weren’t all that impressive in terms of design, the newest generation of this electronic reader has introduced the world to a slimmer, sexier electronic reader. As you know, people want their electronic gadgets as thin and unobtrusive as possible. And Kindle certainly delivers with its attractive, slim profile.
- Books Galore. Amazon has been working tirelessly to offer more books to Kindle customers than any other device is capable of delivering. In the process, they pretty much knocked the Sony e-reader out of the industry, for all practical purposes. Let’s face it, people want books – lots of different kinds of books – and the Kindle can deliver more titles than any other electronic reader – with ease.

The Barnes & Noble Nook – Strong Points
- Bigger screen. The newest version of the Nook, called the Nook Color features a larger screen than the Kindle 3. The Nook’s screen is 7 inches, compared to the Kindle’s smaller, 6 inch screen. Yes it is only a one inch difference, but an inch makes a world of difference to some readers, so the Nook has the clear upper-hand in this department.
- Color. This one-word feature is a big one. The Nook Color features a full-color screen, while the Kindle, as of the time of this writing, only offers grayscale coloring. The color on screen puts the Nook a notch above the Kindle when it comes to viewing pictures and illustrated books. However, many hardcore readers don’t care much about the availability of color, so this feature may not be a huge selling feature to some readers.
- Expandable memory. While you may never think that you could fill up the 8 GB of internal memory built into the Nook, many customers are very happy that the Nook allows you to expand the memory ceiling with the addition of an SD memory card slot. That means that you can load the Nook Color up with more data than you can on the current version of Kindle.
Kindle Vs Nook – And now, we look at a few weaknesses of each electronic reader…

Kindle Vs Nook – Amazon Kindle Weaknesses
- No color yet. While there are hints that the future releases of the Kindle will have colored screens, as of right now they don’t. And even though a lot of people may not care about having color for their e-books, it will be in Amazon’s best interest to add this feature sooner rather than later.
- Lower Resolution. The Kindle only offers a resolution rate of 800 by 600 pixels. And while this is more than sufficient for most ebooks, it lags behind the Nook’s 1024 by 600 pixel resolution. As people look to their e-book readers as more than just devices to read books on, it behooves Amazon to add richer resolution to the future Kindle releases.
Kindle Vs Nook – The Barnes & Noble NookColor Weaknesses
- Battery life. The Nook pays a serious price for offering color and a higher resolution. Unfortunately that price is paid in terms of battery life. The Nook only offers about 8 hours of power before it needs to be recharged. That means that if you plan on taking the Nook on the road with you, that you had better have a good resource to get it recharged, or you won’t be doing much reading.
- A higher price. Many people are concerned with the bottom line, and this is where the Nook may be losing a lot of potential customers. The NookColor costs over $100 more, on average, than the Kindle. If Barnes & Noble ever wants to knock Amazon out of the top spot, they’ll have to find a way to offer a lower price to potential buyers. While it’s nice that the Nook has some snazzy features, like color and more memory, people still love to get a bargain when they can.

As you can see, both the Kindle and the Nook have their own, distinct pros and cons. And it’s really impossible to say that one is “better” than the other. Some people love the fact that Amazon continues to offer exclusive deals and extra money off to customers who buy the Kindle. While others enjoy the fact that the Nook is seen as somewhat of an underdog choice when it comes to e-book readers, and they seem to be willing to pay a higher price to be in a more exclusive club.
Kindle Vs Nook Which One Will Come Out on Top
Only time will tell which of these e-book readers will come out as the reigning champion. People who like to have the best quality images, and who want the most potential memory for their e-reader, will probably enjoy the Nook and find that it offers a bit of a technological edge. While others, who want ultra-fast book delivery, along with a lower price tag, will probably say that the Kindle is the best.
One thing’s for certain, though, both e-book readers are light years ahead of where people thought these kinds of devices would be, just a few years ago. And since technology keeps advancing at rapid rates, it’s likely that we’ll see more improvements to both of these top models in the next few years.

Amazon seems intent on cornering the market, and they continue to throw incentives to new customers in an attempt to make the Kindle the number one electronic reader. But Barnes & Noble don’t appear to be backing down any time soon. And if what they’ve done so far is any indication of the future, we can all expect to see some very big things from the Nook, in terms of cutting edge technology and more advanced viewing features.
Amazon does seem to be taking the threat of the Nook seriously, though, and there are lots of rumors of new features being added to the newest version of the Kindle, but only time will tell if those rumors are true. In the meantime, customers are likely to benefit from this rivalry as both companies are pulling out all the stops to become the world’s number one e-reader manufacturer.
For the time being, though, you’ll end up with the best e-book reader for your needs by taking a look at the features, strengths, and weaknesses of each electronic reader that we listed above. And now matter which model you choose, you’re sure to have hours of great reading ahead of you, with either of these top-notch electronic readers by your side.
